UNIT 6
Cell division (mitosis & meiosis)
Essential Standard
Each student will be able to demonstrate that there is a genetic basis for the transfer of biological characteristics from one generation to the next through reproductive processes.
Learning Targets
-
Illustrate and outline the stages of the cell cycle (interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis) and explain the result of uncontrolled cell division (cancer).
-
Outline the process of meiosis including pairing of homologous chromosomes and crossing over.
-
Compare and contrast the processes of mitosis and meiosis (# of divisions, # of daughter cells, haploid/diploid, compare to parent cell, type of cells, purpose).
-
Distinguish between sexual and asexual reproduction, providing advantages and disadvantages for both.
-
Demonstrate an understanding of stem cells by investigation one therapeutic use.
