Essential Standard

Each student will be able to demonstrate that there is a genetic basis for the transfer of biological characteristics from one generation to the next through reproductive processes.

UNIT 5

DNA & rna (deoxyribonucleic/ribonucleic acid)

Learning Targets

  • Understand all cells contain DNA that code for proteins, which direct cell processes and are expressed as the heritable characteristics.

  • Explain how the structure of DNA allows for replication, transcription, and translation.

  • Demonstrate how a gene directs the production of a protein.

  • Predict the effect of DNA mutations and identify factors that may cause mutations.

  • Describe the structure of a normal chromosome and the types of chromosomal mutations.
